Brock Lesnar And Samoa Joe At WWE Great Balls Of Fire
The biggest thing to come out of the show was obviously Samoa Joe earning the shot at Brock Lesnar and his Universal Title at Great Balls of Fire. I predicted that victory, and I enjoyed that victory.
Why? Well, I am a Roman Reigns fan so I would have been happy to see him win. IF we are heading towards a bigger showdown between him and Lesnar though, I was fine with someone else getting the shot. Something Fray said early in this process resonated with me. Without looking it up exactly, his point was that Samoa Joe was the best guy to go ahead and do a B PPV match with Lesnar.
It's true. Everyone else, especially Finn Balor, and Roman Reigns, could and should be saved for later. Since that's the case I think you go ahead and build Joe up for this, have the match, have a decisive Lesnar victory, and move on.
What concerns me is I think some people are setting themselves up for disappointment. I saw some Tweets about "making Joe" and "launching a new star." I don't see any of that happening. That's NOT what this is about at all.
Here's what you do. You have Joe and Lesnar have a full-on sub-10 minute WAR, with Lesnar ultimately defeating definitively. That's it. That's what you do. There's no need to get cute with it. You don't really need to protect Joe. It's 2017, he's kind of a utility main eventer/upper midcarder. That's fine. He's been great in that role. Just don't get what they are trying to do twisted here. This is about getting Lesnar back out there, this is about getting the Universal Title on a PPV. This is about saving guys like Roman, Finn, Rollins, and maybe even Bray for Lesnar down the road.
The main event of Great Balls of Fire may not be a star-making situation for Samoa Joe, but it will be one heck of a hoss fight...and I'll take that.
