There's been a lot of talk about how WWE is handling Seth Rollins' WWE World Heavyweight Title run. The primary concern seems to be that he's being booked weakly and I can understand that sentiment, but I disagree with it.
Yes, Seth Rollins relies on The Authority to defend his title. Typically, that is troublesome with me. This was particularly troublesome to me when The Miz needed outside interference to defend his WWE Title against Jerry "The King" Lawler. I hated it when Jack Swagger couldn't buy a win as World Heavyweight Champion. These situations are similar in part because they all used surprise Money in the Bank cash-in's to gain their titles. A champion with no legitimacy can certainly be problematic.
All that said, I think Rollins is different. As The Architect of The Shield he was always portrayed as a schemer, a thinker. Rollins has enough legitimacy at this point that I think he can play the cowardly weasel who escapes with the title and it doesn't hurt him. He was already a top of the card talent and pushed as The Future of the WWE as well as The Authority's chosen one so it wasn't a situation like Miz/Swagger where a midcarder is elevated to top of the card status allegedly overnight. The sliminess of Seth Rollins really makes the gimmick work better for that matter. He doesn't need to go out there and physically dominate his opponents. He needs to retain the title by hook or by crook and cut promos with that obnoxious laugh as much as possible. That's what he needs to do and it really works for him.
Much like the Neville discussion, I think people need to remember that there isn't always one right way to push a guy. So far as I'm concerned the Seth Rollins push is working and he needs to keep it up. WWE has to be careful, but if they handle this correctly you'll have a WWE Universe that just cannot wait to see that guy finally lose the strap. Until then, embrace the slippery nature of Seth Rollins for what it is.
