Ernie Ladd is a guy who I hear nothing but good things about but have seen precious little of his work. The promo below was shared on WCMB and from what I understand it was a good sample of Ladd's mic work.
The whole thread is worth a look. The fine posters over there discuss Ladd's most often used phrases and some of the mentality he had with that gimmick. This is a fascinating snapshot of that day and age really.
My favorite part of this is the "and I ran him clean out of Georgia" comment.
When I was in college I spent a lot of time at Southlake Mall in Morrow, GA. They had a sports shop there called The Pro-Image if I recall correctly. The gentleman that either owned or ran it started bringing in wrestling shirts during the Monday Night War. Anyhow, he talked to me about how certain shirts didn't sell (Boss Man and Giant, I bought one of each however) and all that. Then he laid this one on me. He claimed that he played football at Grambling with Ernie Ladd. I never thought to get the guy's name so to this day I have no idea whether it's true or not. He seemed like and upstanding guy and all so I tend to believe him, but I wish I could confirm it.
