Road Warriors vs Midnight Express in 1986

I guess I got used to the 90s-era Road Warriors look because they look absolutely massive here. Good action, crazy finish. Not the most satisfying way to book this, but I guess it did it's job.

Even on YouTube you can tell that there is a vibe that the Road Warriors (Roadwarriors as the graphic said) bring to the arena.  Those guys were simply incredible back then.  Great theme music too.  It should be noted that the Midnights had fantastic theme music as well.

Who do you like teaming with "Beautiful" Bobby Eaton in the Midnight Express? "Loverboy" Dennis Condrey or "Sweet" Stan Lane?

Lastly, it's always good to see Ray Traylor may he rest in peace.

John Cena visits Piper's Pit plus his thoughts on the WWE Title belt

If you are not watching RAW tonight, you missed out on an excellent Piper's Pit segment with John Cena.  "Rowdy" Roddy Piper is obviously an all-timer, but he is very hit or miss for me when he shows up on WWE programming.  Well tonight we got quality Piper.  Check it out on WWE.com after the show at some point.

While watching RAW, I headed over to DOT NET and read a brief interview recap with John Cena.  You may know that the WWE belt is a source of irritation for me.  I was glad to see that John Cena apparently feels the same.
"I have thought that for three years," Cena responded. "Either classic or new. It needs a change."
Between this and finally ditching the jorts I can honestly say I can't help but to like John Cena just a bit more.

FFA: Alabama Crimson Tide: 2011 Iron Bowl Champions

Alabama 42/Auburn 14. That's how it ended. The 14 were earned on a fumble recovery in the end zone and a kick return for a TD. Looking back, it was sort of fun that Jordan-Hare Stadium got whipped into a frenzy by the KO return for a TD that opened the second half. Why? It's because Alabama was simply the better team this season and especially yesterday. That last gasp by Auburn was pretty much the end of it. Alabama did like they typically do and methodically ran their offense and let the defense suffocate the Tigers.

To all this I have only one thing to say, "Roll Tide, Roll!"

Dr. Saturday has a much more fitting look at yesterday's Iron Bowl and the BCS implications.

And you will know Alabama’s closing BCS statement by the trail of blood

Punk's perspective on his SummerSlam return

DOT NET recapped an ESPN interview with CM Punk.  While I still think CM Punk is the best thing in wrestling right now, he is wrong about this:
"In a perfect world, yeah, you could stretch everything out more, but realistically, it's a business," Punk said. "You needed a main event for SummerSlam. So for all of the armchair bookers out there who are like, 'No, Punk came back too soon!' I agree with you, but, the second-largest pay-per-view of the year, what match are you going to put in the main event? People need to take that into account. Nobody ever likes to look into things, they just like to bitch and complain about everything."
I don't think he's wrong simply because he has a different perspective on his return than I do. He is wrong for implying that people who disliked the return "just like to bitch and complain" and do not like "to look into things." That is an ignorant position to take in my opinion. I think it is entirely possible to look at all factors related to Punk's return before SummerSlam and still say, "It was a mistake." I know that we spent a ton of time discussing it on A1.  Jason Powell touches on this as well:
An argument can be made that WWE could have ultimately made more money in the long run if they had held Punk off television after Money in the Bank. Of course, there are no guarantees and WWE opted to put Punk on their biggest show of the summer.
Punk discusses the Rock as well.  The whole DOT NET recap is worth a read.

WWE '12 Review

Picked up WWE '12 on its release day.  Have played quite a bit since then.  Here are some early thoughts on the game.
  • The AI is much improved, the CPU opponents can actually beat you fairly frequently on Normal.
  • It's a very good looking game.
  • They got rid of the button mashing system for breaking pins.  You have use the "Hold X and release in the blue area" method which is much tougher for me.
  • Running strikes and grapples are harder to hit than they used to be. If you don't time it just right you will run into the opponent and you both stumble backwards a few steps.
  • Tag finishers are awesome. I've used the Doomsday Device and Demolition's finishers a bunch. Really cool.
  • The roster is incredible and will only get better once Savage and Foley are released. I wish it was 80s style Savage, but I'll take cowboy hat/long tights Savage as well.  Guys like Demolition, The Road Warriors, Vader, Alberto del Rio, Brock Lesnar and Sin Cara are excellent additions.
  • The updated CM Punk entrance, the option for Disfigured Cody Rhodes or Dashing Cody Rhodes are some examples of nice touches that improve the game.  One miss is that the Mark Henry entrance looks like his standard face one and isn't as menacing as it should be.
If you're a wrestling fan or liked the Smackdown series, I highly recommend picking up this game.  You will not be disappointed.

John Morrison leaving WWE?

Lords of Pain posted (should that be pasted?) that John Morrison may be on his way out of WWE. His contract is supposedly expiring and neither side seems interested in working together any longer.
It's said that Morrison wants out of WWE and the company wants him gone also.
No idea how true this is, but Morrison does seem to be dissatisfied with WWE especially since they sent Melina packing.

The article went on to say that TNA/Impact Wrestling may be interested in bringing him in for the X Division. If that's the case the Prince of Parkour would appear to be...landing on his feet.

DOT NET also had a piece noting that JoMo is not advertised for any shows past next Monday's RAW.

Don't know if you caught this link on RAW last night, but it flashed up on the screen briefly. Here's the video that it links to.

The creepy nature of the video and the quote below from it leads me to believe that it's the new viral marketing campaign for the Undertaker's annual return.

...a familiar force shall arrive to claim what is his.

It's a cool video, but the Undertaker is one of the least compelling WWE Legends out there at this point so far as I am concerned.

We'll see.

Survivor Series promo: Alliance vs Mercenaries

This was from Survivor Series 90.  Slaughter cuts a solid promo for his team.  The Bushwhackers seem even more wired up than usual.  I ran across this while looking through some photos on WWE.com. I didn't recognize Boris Zhukhov in the picture because he looked bigger than I recalled.  A quick Google found showed me what match it was from and I found this promo.

SNL: Andre the Giant Chooses an Ice Cream Flavor

Some told me this wasn't funny, others said it was. I think it was pretty amusing. It helped that they kept the skit short because the novelty would have worn off pretty quickly.

Update: TMZ contacted Andre's family about this and here's what TMZ had to say about that conversation
Andre the Giant's family was watching when Jason Segel impersonated the late wrestler on "Saturday Night Live" this weekend ... AND THEY LOVED IT!!

Sin Cara injured at Survivor Series

Just caught this from WWE's official Twitter feed (@WWE).

I had read that he left the traditional Survivor Series style elimination match early with an injury. It was apparently a fairly serious one judging by this Tweet.

Standard disclaimer: I have zero idea if this is a storyline development or what. I'm not sure how they use the official WWE Twitter feed as it relates to injuries etc. It sounded to me like he left he match with what looked like a legitimate injury though. Will confirm his status and update this article at that time.

DOT NET is reporting that Sin Cara will be out of action for 6-9 months

F4Wonline/Wrestling Observer is reporting the same.

JBL on Marc Mero

SAW recently had a piece on Marc Mero. It just so happens that JBL spoke out about Mr. Mero tonight via Twitter (@JCLayfield).

Wow, harsh words for the former Johnny B. Badd from Mr. Layfield. I'm not sure what the source of that heat is, but it would appear to be legit.

After posting, JBL added this:

Atsushi Onita's ECW Debut

This video was shared by SAW contributor, Norko. Enjoy some good old fashioned ECW "garbage" wrestling.

Norko also shared some background on Onita if you aren't familiar with him.
This one had potential to be relatively big for ECW back in the day.  They had already brought in Masato Tanaka, but this was the guy who was the founder of FMW.  It was supposed to lead to an explosion cage match in ECW that he was known for in FMW in Japan.  IIRC this was his only appearance in the US for ECW.  He tried again to do the big explosion match a few years later with XPW.
Thanks again to Norko for the background. I, for one, was not terribly familiar with Onita. I recognized his name as one of those hardcore Japanese wrestlers, but can't say I ever saw him before this.

FFA: Mark Ingram/Nissan Heisman House

My Twitter feed got flooded with people talking about Mark Ingram's Heisman House Nissan commercial.  I had to look it up.

Pretty funny...

Ingram looks a lot better in that Crimson Tide 22 than that New Orleans Saints' 28. Roll Tide, Roll!

Matt Hardy: Arrested

TMZ posted possibly the least shocking item last night. TMZ: Wrestling Star Matt Hardy KICKED OUT of Rehab Arrested After Failed Booze Test
We're told the staff at the rehab got suspicious of Hardy's behavior on Friday and gave him a breathalyzer test on the spot ... which he failed. According to our sources, Hardy was adamant he wasn't drinking ... and said he only failed because he had "just used mouthwash."
As always, I certainly hope Matt can get things straightened out, but with each new issue that seems less and less likely.

Thanks to A1 poster, Horsehead, for posting this on A1-Wrestling.com.

WWE '12: Macho Man and WCW

As if this game needed to get any better...the late "Macho Man" Randy Savage has been confirmed as DLC in WWE '12.  He made his first WWE game appearance in a long time in WWE All-Stars.  Now we finally get him in the main franchise game.

Read the official announcement on THQ's WWE '12 site.
He made his return in the smash hit WWE All Stars, but now he's giving a flying elbow drop to the Superstars and Legends of WWE '12
Savage's inclusion is more than enough reason to be excited about this game, but there is another reason that SAW is excited about this game.

It turns out that World Championship Wrestling (WCW) will play a large part in the storyline mode of this game. There are pictures of all the titles out there and they even have nWo-style WWE and World Title belts with WCW spray painted on them.

I am always excited about the latest iteration in this series, but this year should really be great. The addition of Macho and the tip of the cap to WCW will really push it over the top.

Check this picture out, it is my desktop wallpaper at work now.

WWE '12: Mick Foley

That's right, Mrs. Foley's baby boy is part of the WWE Legends DLC for WWE '12. That is a pretty nice addition to the roster. I must admit though that I've always been partial to Cactus Jack though.

Mark Henry finally gets a shirt

Mark Henry debuted his new shirt tonight on RAW.  WWEShop.com has it for $25.  While I liked my suggestion for a redone version of the WWE Hall of Fame logo, this is not a bad shirt at all.

The "All Will Suffer" on the back is a good shirt slogan for the World's Strongest Man.  I am glad WWE finally got around to this as this revitalized Mark Henry is one hell of a great heel.  Keep it up WWE, keep it up.

Kamala's leg amputation confirmed

Kamala the Ugandan Giant's recent leg amputation has been confirmed by the man himself.  TMZ posted this early Monday morning.  Be sure to check the TMZ link as it has a video message from Kamala himself.  It appears that he is keeping things in perspective:
"I'm blessed. I'm alive."
He also went on to add:
"I only lost my leg, not my life."
SAW wishes Kamala a speedy recovery. Kamala is still one of the great gimmicks in wrestling in my opinion.  The video shared on TMZ is posted after the jump.

Eddie Guerrero passed away six years ago today

Eddie passed away six years ago today.  His widow, Vickie Guerrero, posted the following on Twitter yesterday.

I got a kick out of that since Mexican-American Eddie Guerrero's favorite meal was...lasagna.

Honestly, Eddie was never one of my "top guys," but I know that I am in the vast minority in that opinion. He was beloved by wrestling fans worldwide.

RIP Eddie, I know you are missed.

FFA: 21 Jump Street movie

As the old joke goes, Hollywood is running out of ideas. Here's a Dukes of Hazzard-style remake of the 80's 21 Jump Street. It stars Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill. Ice Cube will be the captain. Anyhow, here's the trailer. Hopefully they work that awesome theme song into the movie at some point. That is posted after the jump....street.  Sorry, couldn't resist.  If you don't remember 21 Jump Street, it's the show that launched the careers of Holly Robinson Peete, Richard Grieco, Peter DeLuise and last and certainly least...Johnny Depp.

Further evidence Mark Henry rules

Shore's WWE Smackdown Hitlist on DOT NET had this in its Hits section:
Mark Henry: It didn't matter if he was talking to Daniel Bryan or Big Show, or if he was wrestling. Everything Mark Henry did on this show was top notch. From his cadence to his facial expressions to his gesture, he is the top guy in all of WWE, regardless of what the machine tells you. Right now, he is the best reason to order Survivor Series, not the Rock and John Cena.
Ever since WWE fired up this legitimate push for Mark Henry, he's been almost CM Punk level at doing all the little things right. I have said all this before, but his facial expressions add so much to that gimmick. In Friday's show, the look he got on his face when he got hit with the chair was awesome. When he delivers the WSS and has that pissed off look on his face? Perfect.

Henry really has become an asset for WWE. Let's hope they realize that and keep using him effectively. He has been a pleasure to watch lately.

Marc Mero/Dusty Rhodes story

While watching college football today I checked out DOT NET and saw an interview recap with Marc Mero.  I know I am in the minority when I say I liked his boxer gimmick in WWE, but I figured I would give this a look.  There is some interesting things in there, but this story was the highlight.   I think the clincher for me is that the executive at the desk is "The American Dream" Dusty Rhodes.
"I go upstairs to Dusty's office and Dusty's on the phone. I'm waiting for him to get off the phone and he just puts the phone down for a second and goes, "Here. Take this contract and have your attorney look it over and then get back to me." And that was it. Now I'm standing in the office, looking at the contract, and it says $75,000 your first year. $150,000 your second year. So I go, "Dusty, excuse me. Do you mind if I sign this right now?" He goes, "Sure. Do whatever you want." I go, "I don't even have an attorney, man." (laughs) I signed the contract, you know, and I was just so excited that I was now a member of WCW and that's how my whole career started. It was a dream come true."
Something about the future Johnny B. Badd and the Dweem having this discussion amuses me.

Kamala: Foot amputation?

One of the fine posters on WCMB, shared the other day that he had heard from someone in the business that Kamala the Ugandan Giant either had or was scheduled to have his foot amputated due to complications from diabetes.  Obviously, if true, this is a shame.  I have not seen this widely reported elsewhere though so I'm still unsure about the validity of this claim.  Shoot me a link if you do see a reputable story about this so I can update this article.

Kamala is one of the great gimmicks/characters in wrestling history.  It is just such a cool and unique gimmick and such a part of the over-the-top world of professional wrestling.  I really enjoyed learning more about Kamala as well during the Card Subject to Change documentary that I posted about around 10 days ago.

Here's the first part of one of my favorite Kamala moments.

FFA: It's Friday!

This week's, "It's Friday!" song is Cumbersome by Seven Mary Three.  Love this song.  Unfortunately, it's not set to work with embedding so you'll have to click this link to enjoy this song.

Had a great time at the Georgia Tech game last night. There's something special about college football in Atlanta on a Thursday night.

Have a great weekend and finish this week strong as always.

WWE tribute to Smokin' Joe Frazier

The item that really made me post this was the mention that Joe Frazier "became the only celebrity ever to appear at both Starrcade and WrestleMania." That's an interesting piece of information there.

I'm not 100% it is true though. Depending on definition of celebrity it seems like at the very least Steve "Mongo" McMichael might qualify. From what I have always heard, he was in Lawrence Taylor's corner at WrestleMania XI and was of course a member of WCW's roster during the Monday Night Wars.

Either way, Frazier's wrestling involvement is really cool. The piece WWE did on him was a nice little tribute to a great champion.

RIP Mr. Frazier

A1's CM Punk Appreciation Thread

If you like CM Punk, and you should, you need to check out the CM Punk appreciation thread on A1-Wrestling.com.

The latest gem added to this thread was by A1 poster, Jef Leopard.  Punk gets a great burn on some fan over in Europe.

"I bet you watch TNA, don't you?!" "Your friend does!"

Man, CM Punk rules so hard.

FFA: Mizzou joins the SEC

It's finally official, the Missouri Tigers have joined the Southeastern Conference.  Here is a link to the story on the SEC's official site.

It's probably not the "sexiest pick" out there, but it expands the geographical footprint.  It also adds another member of the AAU to the SEC, which from an educational standpoint the conference presidents like.  That brings the SEC's total of AAU schools to four with Missouri, Texas A&M, Florida and Vanderbilt all members.

Card Subject to Change documentary

The guys on WCMB were discussing a documentary about indy wrestling titled, "Card Subject to Change."  It sounded interesting so I checked it out.  There is nothing in there that will be earth shattering to a smart fan or even anyone who has seen "Beyond the Mat" but it is still a fascinating look at the indy wrestling scene. It focuses on wrestlers like Kevin Sullivan, Kamala, Sabu and other veterans who are wrapping up their careers. The documentary also takes a look at guys like Rhett Titus who are rising stars in the business, Sgt. Jimmy Storm who wrestled his debut match in his 30s and troubled stars like Trent Acid.

Although there is nothing groundbreaking here for the IWC, I certainly think this documentary is worth an hour and a half of your time. The trailer from the official site is posted below so you can get an idea of what to expect.  Stay through the credits as there is not only additional footage, but you can hear Kamala sing one of his R&B songs.  The Ugandan Giant has released two R&B albums.  I'm dead serious.

Booker T returning to the squared circle

Per DOT NET, Smackdown commentator and former world champion, Booker T will be returning to the ring.  The linked ProWrestling.net article has more specifics, but if you don't want to know the specifics of Booker's return do not read this post after the jump.

As an aside, I always loved the Harlem Heat tag team.  Booker T winning the WCW Title was a huge moment for me and one of the things that WCW did absolutely right in there dying days.

More specifics about his return after the jump...
