A1 Tag Cup 2011

You may remember that Harley Race won this year's iteration of the A1 Cup.  What you may or may not know is that A1's Zandrax also organizes an A1 Tag Cup.  As the title of this post implies, it's time for the 2011 A1 Tag Cup

Before we get into the specifics of this year's tourney let's discuss its history.  Here is a brief profile of the tournament:
  • It starts this week with first round matches announced on the A1 podcast
  • This is the third tournament
  • 128 teams are vying for the crown
  • Teams are still allowed in the tournament after winning it
  • No wrestlers or names may be entered twice in a single tournament
    • If Freebirds are Gordy and Hayes then Miracle Violence Connection cannot compete
    • If Arn and Tully are the Horsemen then Malenko and Benoit cannot compete as Horsemen (not under that name at least)
  • Two different teams have won the crown so far
  • The Hart Foundation won the first tournament by edging the Road Warriors
  • I still think A1 got that one wrong
  • A1 redeemed itself when the Road Warriors won the second tournament
There you have it, the Hart Foundation and the Road Warriors are the two previous winners of the A1 Tag Cup.  You may wonder why I didn't mention who the Road Warriors defeated in the finals the year they won it.  It's a long story that I will cover at a later time.  I will say that the original A1 went down and had to be replaced with a new one.  Due to this we cannnot always just look back at old threads to figure out how these tourneys (A1 Cup, A1 Tag Cup and Slugfest of Doom) played out.  Like I said though, more on that later.

If the A1 Tag Cup sounds like fun to you don't hesitate to get in on the action.  Go to A1-Wrestling.com and register so you can have a say on who wins the battle between these 128 teams.
